Wolcott – James Maurice Whalen, 84, passed away on October 4, 2017.
James was born on December 29, 1932 in Waterbury, son of the late Francis and Margaret (McArdle) Whalen. He graduated from Leavenworth High School in 1950 and shortly after joined the United States Navy in 1951, serving until 1955. James remained active in the Navy Reserves and advanced to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 2, retiring after 30 years of service. He worked as an electrician and Quality Control Tech at North American Phillips in Cheshire. He retired in 1988 to South Carolina and enjoyed year-round golf. In 1989 he became a life member of the American Legion Post 71 in North Augusta, S.C.
He is survived by his brothers, Francis “Bud” Whalen and Richard Whalen; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Veronica Shove.
A funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Michaels Church, 62 St Michael's Dr, Waterbury. Family and friends are asked to meet at the church prior to the start of Mass. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
