Maureen Theresa (Hopkins) Bergin

Waterbury - Maureen Theresa (Hopkins) Bergin, 75, wife of the late Patrick S. Bergin, passed away peacefully after a prolonged illness on Saturday, December 2, surrounded by family and loved ones. Maureen was born March 24, 1942 in Cincinnati, OH, daughter of the late Thomas Hopkins and Eileen (Loftus) Hopkins. She was the eldest of 5 children.

Maureen was affectionately known as “Mo” by her siblings and friends, “T-T Mo-Mo” by her nieces and nephews, and “Ma-Mo” by her children and beloved grandsons. She is survived by a son, Edward D. Bergin III, his wife Shirley and their two sons, Finnegan and Addison, of Wilton, CT, two daughters Maureen G. (Molly Bergin) Perkins and her two sons, Michael and Matthew Perkins of Waterbury, and Sarah M. (Bitty) Bergin of Alexandria, VA., a brother Timothy Hopkins of Cincinnati, OH, and two sisters, Anne F. (Hopkins) Laake and her husband Ken of Cincinnati, OH, and Martha E. (Hopkins) Crothers and her husband Charles of Cherry Hill, NJ. In addition, she is survived by her in-laws JoAnn (Mulholland) Bergin of Waterbury, William J. Bergin Sr. and his wife Claudia (Bergen) Bergin of Southbury, Ellyn (Bergin) Scully and her husband William of Waterbury, Margaret (Bergin) O’Connor of New York, NY, Martin J. Bergin and his wife Julie (Tacey) Bergin, of Palm Bay, FL, Carol (Zhunt) Bergin, Ellen (Coughlin) Bergin, and Maureen (Moore) Bergin of Waterbury, CT, and Elizabeth L. Bergin of New York, NY, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Maureen was predeceased by her husband, Patrick S. Bergin, daughter, Julia E. Bergin, brother, Thomas Hopkins, sister-in-law Charlene A. Hopkins, and brothers-in-law Edward D. Bergin, Jr, John M. Bergin, Anthony P. Bergin and Robert J. O’Connor.

Maureen was a graduate of Notre Dame Academy High School in Cincinnati, OH and received a Diploma of Nursing from the Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati, OH where she worked as a Resident Nurse and later at Waterbury Hospital.

Maureen was a renowned dog handler and breeder.  She bred dozens of Champion Yorkshire Terriers and Maltese over the years. She was a member and past President of The Naugatuck Valley Kennel Club, a lifetime member of The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America, the President of the Yorkshire Terrier Club of Greater New York, and a lifetime member and Board Member of The Progressive Dog Club of Greater New York. Later in life she became a horse enthusiast and applied much of her breeding knowledge to picking Derby winners.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, December 8, from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Bergin Funeral Home 290 East Main St., Waterbury. The funeral will be Saturday, December 9, at 9:30am at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception Church, 74 W. Main St., Waterbury, CT.  Burial will be private.
