Waterbury – Alicia Velez Segarra, 87, passed away on Wednesday evening, December 27, at Waterbury Hospital. She was the widow of Rene Segarra.

Alicia was born February 28, 1936, in Ponce, Puerto Rico, daughter of the late Guillermo Velez and Eufemia Collazo. She came to United States in 1957 residing in Brooklyn, NY until 1972 when she moved to Waterbury.

Alicia was a member of the former Iglesia Cristiana Juan 3:16 of Waterbury for many years. She served as an elder, deaconess, secretary and treasurer.

She enjoyed gardening, knitting and sewing. Alicia was a nanny, caring for as many children as she could in the community including her own grandchildren. As a homemaker, she enjoyed cooking many delicious and unforgettable meals for her family and friends. There was nothing better than a home-cooked meal by "abuela." However, most importantly, the times spent in the company of her children and family filled her heart with joy and happiness. Her loving and giving nature will never be forgotten. We will miss her presence in our lives immensely.

She is survived by her children, Roberto Segarra, Lourdes Rodriguez and her husband Victor; Rene Segarra and his wife Anna; her daughter-in-law, Margarita Segarra; her siblings, Jose Velez, Israel Velez, Luz Aponte and Hector Velez; her grandchildren, Roberto Segarra, Jr, Victor Rodriguez, Jr, Jezinia Rodriguez-Aiello, Elias Rodriguez, Wilfredo Segarra and Veronica Barnes; fourteen great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Israel Segarra, her grandson, Israel Segarra, Jr, her granddaughter, Jeanette Silva and her siblings, Nereida Velez and Gladys Velez.

The family would like to acknowledge and express gratitude to all those who dedicated their time with caring for mom.

Calling hours will be Tuesday, January 2, from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Bergin Funeral Home, 290 East Main St. Waterbury. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday morning at 11:00 A.M. Burial will follow at New Pine Grove Cemetery.
