Waterbury – Mr. David Murphy, 77, passed away on Monday evening, August 29, at Vitas Innovative Hospice at St. Mary's Hospital. David was born in Waterbury on April 2, 1945, son of the late Francis X. and Eleanor (Shea) Murphy. Raised in Waterbury he was graduate of Sacred Heart Grammar School and Sacred Heart High School. He went on to receive his degrees from Sacred Heart University, Huron College and Southern Connecticut State University. David taught English at Driggs School and then West Side Middle School for over 30 years. He was a tireless advocate for his students and a supportive faculty member at both schools. In addition to his teaching career, David worked in the mentoring program at West Side after his retirement. He was an artist and avid reader of literature, especially Mark Twain and J.R.R. Tolkien. David was a devout fan of the Boston Red Sox and the University of Notre Dame. He entertained the family for years with his yearly fireside poetry readings on Halloween and his annual Christmas poems. He will be dearly missed; the family shall not see his like again. David is survived by his brothers, Bruce Murphy, Chris Murphy, Keith Murphy and Todd Murphy; his sisters, Jill Maunsell and Judy Lawlor; his nieces and nephews, Shawn Murphy, Jill Gilmore, Brian Murphy, Chris Murphy, Erin Laferiere, Paige Gomes, Michael Maunsell, David Maunsell, Ryan Murphy, Devin Murphy, Kyle Murphy, Alison Bouffard, Gretchen Jaber, Michael Lawlor, Molly Iannantuoni and John Murphy. He was predeceased by his brother, Sandy Murphy. A memorial Mass will be held on a date and time to be announced.
