Obituary

Waterbury- Mrs. Dorothy (Stuessi) Cavanaugh, 77, died Saturday evening, May 26, at her home. She was the wife of Joseph W. Cavanaugh.

Mrs. Cavanaugh was born March 31, 1935 in Waterbury, daughter of the late Jacob and Madelin (Rosa) Stuessi. Raised in Waterbury, she attended local schools and was a graduate of Crosby High School class of 1953. Dorothy received her Bachelors degree from the University of Connecticut, graduating in 1957. In her freshman year at UCONN Dorothy met her future husband Joe and they have been together ever since. Dorothy continued her education at Central Connecticut State University, receiving her Masters degree, then received her 6th year certificate from St. Joseph's College in West Hartford and received her Advanced Certificate from the University of Bridgeport.

Dorothy taught for 44 years, starting at Bucks Hill School in Waterbury and then moved  to Hillside Middle School in Naugatuck. She retired from Hillside Middle School as the head of the Math Department. In her retirement she became an adjunct professor in the mathematics department at Naugatuck Valley Community College.

Dorothy was proud of her Swiss heritage and traveled with Joe many times to Switzerland. She also enjoyed time spent on Hilton Head Island. She was a 30 year member of the Watertown Skating Club, was an avid tennis player and will be remembered as a talented artist. She an active  member of the First Congregational Church of Waterbury and a former member of the Kiwanis Club.

In addition to her husband she is survived by two sisters, Harriet S. Urban and Helen S. Audibert, both of Wolcott; her brother-in-law John Cavanaugh and his wife Patty of Waterbury; her cousins, Margith Schneider and her husband Reiner and Hans Rudi Reck and his wife Esty, all of Switzerland; her nephews David Audibert and his wife Gail, Kevin Audibert and his wife Linda, Curtis Audibert and his wife Sandy, John Cavanaugh and his wife Amy and Michael Cavanaugh, Jonathon Urban and Jason Urban; her niece Mary Urban Baker and her husband Eric and 12 great nieces and great nephews. She was predeceased by her niece Katie Cavanaugh.

Arrangements: Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 30, at 10:00 A.M. at the First Congregational Church of Waterbury. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday, May 29, from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Bergin Funeral Home 290 East Main St. Memorial contributions may be made in Dorothy's name to the First Congregational Church 222 West Main St. Waterbury, CT 06702.
