Waterbury- Lt. Ernest C. Deal, Sr. 78, retired Lieutenant of Detectives of the Waterbury Police Department, died Wednesday, April 23 at his home. He was the husband of Lillian (Capino) Deal.
Lt. Deal was born September 29, 1929 in Midland City, AL son of the late Crawford W. and Rosa Lee (Brown) Deal. He was a graduate of Leavenworth High School, the Babson Institute of Business Administration in MA and attended the FBI SWAT team training in Quantico, VA. He served honorably in the United States Army from 1950 to 1952.
He was sworn in as a police officer on December 14, 1955 and was assigned to the patrol division on January 29, 1955. In June of 1969 he was re-assigned from the motor patrol division to the youth division; in April of 1970 he was promoted to Sergeant; in July of 1973 he was promoted to Lieutenant; in January of 1974 he was re-assigned from the youth division to Lieutenant of Detectives and worked many high profile cases in Waterbury involving homicides, robberies and narcotics, he also was on the Waterbury Police Department SWAT Team. Lt. Deal retired on August 11, 1989 after 35 years of service. Lieutenant Deal was a second generation law enforcement officer; his father was a sheriff in Alabama for 25 years. Lieutenant Deal was followed in law enforcement by his son, Mark J. Deal, who retired as Captain of Detectives from the Waterbury Police Department in June of 2005 after 30 years of service.
On March 20, 1972 Sgt. Ernest Deal and Sgt. Valentine Bochicchio were awarded by the New England Institute of Law Enforcement Management Command Training Institute at Babson College in Wellesley, MA.
Lt. Deal was the former president of the Waterbury Police Athletic League; and had served as manager at Nottingham Towers Apartments for 27 years and received an award of excellence from SK Management. An active member of the Waterbury Lodge of Elks # 265 he had served as Esteemed Lecturing Knight in 1990, was a member of the VFW Brooklyn Valley Post and was a member of the American Legion Corp. Coyle Post #1. Lt. Deal spent most of his summer months in his vacation home in Belgrade Lakes, ME.
In addition to his wife he is survived by three sons, Ernest C. Deal, Jr of Bristol, Mark J. Deal of Naugatuck and Thomas N. Deal of Hartford; three daughters, Laura R. Hinman of Wolcott, Mary Beth Leighton on Burnham, ME and Kim G. Lanzara of Thomaston; two sisters, Eunice Gibeault and Betty Sabia both of Panama City, FL; 12 grandchildren; 7 nieces and 10 nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Earl L. Deal and a sister, Shirley Gabani.
