Waterbury – Mrs. Fernande "Fern" (Genier) Verriker, 92, resident of the Village at East Farms, passed away peacefully, on August 8, surrounded by close friends, "family," , Brian Flynn, "Corky" Plourde, Fior Fernandes and the staff of the Cheshire House and Seasons Hospice. She was the widow of William Verriker, a former state senator.
Fern was born on February 6, 1921, in Montreal, Canada. She worked with her husband at Verriker Paint Company on West Main St. for many years. She was a graduate of Mattatuck Community College and Southern Connecticut State University.
Fern was very active in the community, contributing to The Waterbury Hospital, St. Mary's Hospital, Mattatuck Community College, The Harold Leever Cancer Center, The Connecticut Community Foundation, St. Anne's Church, The Waterbury Symphony, PETA and others. She was instrumental in establishing the Planned Lifetime Assistance Network (Plan of CT), an organization dedicated to helping individuals struggling with mental disabilities. She took the lead role in establishing the capital improvement project for St. Anne's Church on South Main St. Fern was a world traveler, having visited France, Russia, Turkey and China.
Fern leaves behind her daughter, Margaret Digan Verriker. She was predeceased by her two sons, William and John; brother, Raymond; and sisters, Gertrude, Margarete and Lauritte.
Her Friends, "Family" would like to thank the staff at The Village at East Farms, Dr. David DeLucia, the nurses and staff at Waterbury Hospital, the nurses and staff at the Cheshire House, Staff of Seasons Hospice, her aids at Senior Bridge, with a special thanks to her aide, Fior Fernandes for her several years of devoted and loving care for Fern.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M, on Monday, August 12, at the Shrine of St. Anne's, 515 S. Main St., Waterbury. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Family and friends may call on Monday morning from 8:30 am to 10:30 am at the Bergin Funeral Home, 290 E. Main St.
