A life long resident of Waterbury, Frances Estelle (Dougherty) Vicario passed through the gates of this life on May 1, 2010 two weeks short of her 94th birthday. She was the widow of Michael A. Vicario who preceded her in death in April, 1992, after 51 years of marriage. Born on May 15, 1916 to the late Thomas and Gertrude (Chandler) Dougherty she attended Sacred Heart Grammar and High Schools. A graduate of Perry's Business School Fran worked at the Redwood Furniture Store on East Main St. before working as secretary-clerk to the Superintendent of the New York New Haven and Hartford Railroad in Waterbury. She then worked at Kaynor-Technical Vocational School until her retirement from State service in 1976.
Fran was an active, independent woman, and her interests were numerous and diverse. Her political awareness, both local and national, never waned; she worked on local campaigns as well as advocating for the interests of State retirees in her retirement years. She was the original Martha Stewart of the domestic arts, never hesitating to attempt new sewing, gardening, and decorating projects, wallpapering into her eighties, and growing enough conifer trees to cut one each Christmas. Inspired by her innate curiosity and love of learning, Fran was an avid reader, joining a book club in her eighties. Traveling, especially to the national parks, was a much anticipated pleasure. Frances enjoyed the companionship of many life long friends, and cared deeply for her family. She liked nothing better than spending holidays and summer picnics with her extended family.
Fran is survived by her children, Michael A. Vicario, of Waterbury, and Jeanette F. Nadeau, of Santa Barbara, CA., her brothers, Thomas Dougherty of Morris, and James Doherty of Cheshire, their wives, Lorraine and Frances, respectively, as well as her many nephews and their families. The family expresses our deep appreciation to Connecticut Community Cares, Inc., and their case manager, Rethema Blackwell, for the excellent case management services provided to Fran over the past seven years. Fran referred to her visiting nurses, in particular, as her 'special angels'. They are Sue Montesano and Valerie Barkus, and we are most grateful for their love and support.
Fran was long time parishioner of Sts. Peter and Paul Church, and a funeral Mass will be celebrated there on Saturday, May 15, 10:30am with a graveside service at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please make a donation, in her memory, to the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra, P.O. Box 1762, Waterbury, CT. 06721-1762 or the Southwest Indian Foundation, P.O.
