Prospect- Mr. Francis X. Duffy, 89, died Wednesday, November 9, at the Grimes Center in New Haven with his family by his side. He was the husband of the late Francois (Jodoin) Duffy.
Mr. Duffy was born in Waterbury on September 20, 1922 son of the late Michael J. and Mary (Emmett) Duffy. Raised in Waterbury he attended Sacred Heart Grammar School and was a graduate of Wilby High School. For many years he served as a volunteer in the Prospect Fire Department and had served as a chairman for the Prospect Republican Town Committee. He had served honorably in the U.S. Navy as a yeoman first class. Most of his military service was spent in Sitka, Alaska where he contributed to the museum numerous photographs currently on display. The photographs helped define the military history and presence in the area during WWII and the relationship of the military with the native Alaskan Indians.
He had been employed by the NY Daily News, NY Journal American and various other NY newspapers as a stereotype printer. He served numerous years as president of the stereotypers union, working tirelessly for the benefit of the members and their families.
He was a devoted, loving father who was ever present with support and encouragement for his children and grandchildren. Some of his best times came in later years as he enjoyed traveling by train with his grandchildren to Virginia Beach and taking cruises to celebrate anniversaries and birthdays. He taught his children the value of unconditional love of family and to persevere when times are tough.
He is survived by one son, Emmett Duffy of Prospect; three daughters, Susan D. Thibodeau and her husband Howard of Virginia Beach, VA, Kathleen Malcolm and her husband Douglas of Branford and Patricia Duffy and her husband James Melling of New Haven; two sisters, Mary Reichenbach of Bethlehem and Agnes Blum of Southbury; three grandchildren, Meghan E. Malcolm, Kathryn A. Malcolm and Daniel Duffy Melling and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Joseph K. Duffy, his brothers Joseph, William and John Duffy and sister Anna Duffy.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the Grimes Center for all their tireless hours of care and support. For the last 18 months of his life he resided at Branford Hills Nursing Center in Branford. These were some of his happiest days.
