Waterbury- Iris M. Mitchell, 73, passed away on Sunday, November 8, at her home surrounded by her family.
Iris was born August 6, 1942 in St. Ann, Jamaica, daughter of the late Wilmot Mitchell and Alberta Davis. Iris worked for many years as a seamstress in Jamaica. In 1989 she moved to New York City and then, the following year, to Danbury, where she lovingly cared for the Whitcombe children for many years as their nanny. During this time she also obtained a Certified Nurse's Aide license and worked part-time at Mediplex nursing home in Danbury.
In 2000 she moved to Waterbury and, during the past seven years, she cared for the elderly parents of several families in Western Connecticut as a home care aide. She will be fondly remembered for her caring nature, trustworthiness and strong work ethic, as well as for her love of gardening.
She is survived by one son, Locksley A. Crew of Waterbury; two daughters, Woneta A. Trench-Falcnor and Doreth P. Shand, both of Waterbury; one brother, George Mitchell of Florida; one sister, Evlyn Green of England; her partner, Stanford Davis of Waterbury; three grandchildren, Shanna, Locksley Jr. and Lancearene and many nieces and nephews.
Arrangements: A funeral service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 16 Church St. Waterbury on Monday, November 16, at 11:30 A.M. Burial will be private. Arrangements are in the care of the Bergin Funeral Home.
