Obituary

Waterbury – Israel Segarra, 61, passed away on Friday, August 23, 2019 at Yale New Haven Hospital. He was the husband of Margarita (Rivera) Segarra. Israel was born September 23, 1957 in Brooklyn, New York, son of Alicia Velez Segarra of Waterbury and the late Rene Segarra. He moved to Waterbury in 1972 and was a member of the House of Prayer Church of Waterbury. In May of 1986 Israel became a police officer for the City of Waterbury. In December of 1989 he was reassigned to Vice and Intelligence Division (Tactical Narcotics Team); In November of 1990 he received Department Recognition; Level 3 accommodation for Meritorious Police Duty and went on to retire in October of 2002. Following his retirement, he went to work for the State of Connecticut Dept. of Education and worked as a School Resource Officer until his death. In addition, to his wife, he is survived by his son, Wilfredo Segarra of Waterbury; his daughter, Veronica Barnes of New Britain; two brothers, Roberto Segarra Sr., Rene Segarra Jr., all of Waterbury; one sister, Lourdes Rodriguez of East Hampton; eight grandchildren, Wilfredo Jr. and Izabella Segarra; Jaylen and Aaron Barnes, Javier, Jonathan and Jared Martinez, Giana Silva and two great-grandchildren, Evona and Ethan Israel Martinez and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Israel Segarra, Jr. and daughter, Jeanette Silva. Israel also known as "Tito" or "Izzy" enjoyed spending time with his family, working out at the gym and taking long walks. He loved the Lord and took pleasure playing bass for the worship team. He enjoyed singing, writing and composing music on the keyboard. He was known for his energetic and humorous stories. Friends and family will always remember how he blessed them by sharing his faith, wisdom and advice. He will be greatly missed. Family and friends may visit with Israel's family on Tuesday from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at The House of Prayer Church 1245 Thomaston Ave. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 28, at 11:00 A.M. at The House of Prayer Church. Burial will follow in New Pine Grove Cemetery.
