Obituary

Waterbury- James "Jay" Gilmore, Jr. died unexpectedly on Saturday December 1st. He was the husband of Susan (Lyons) Gilmore. Jay was born in Newport, Rhode Island to James and Elizabeth (Griffin) Gilmore and was raised in the Waterville section of Waterbury. He attended Sprague School and graduated from Crosby High. He served in the US Army during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

He began working for UPS in 1965 and was a member of Teamster Local 677. Jay worked at UPS for 20 years before becoming a business agent for Local 677 in Waterbury. He went on to become President and then to Secretary-Treasurer before retiring in 2002. He was also a trustee of the Teamster Joint Council #10. He held various other positions in the union and devoted his entire working life for the benefit of workers and labor unions.

Jay and his wife traveled extensively while working for the Teamsters to wonderful destinations with great co-workers. He enjoyed summers on the Cape with his entire family. He was co-owner of Shenanigan's restaurant in Waterville and held court there at any given chance. Jay was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots, and the annual races at Saratoga racetrack. He was proud to have a race named after him at Saratoga upon his retirement. He will be sorely missed by his Ordinary Joe's Wednesday night buddies.

His greatest accomplishments and the ones he was most proud of were his five sons; Michael and his wife Jackie, Jim and his wife Ellen, Brian and his wife Jill, Steven and his wife Patti, and Robert. He loved and was loved by his 9 grandchildren; Sam, Jackson, Ethan, Taylor, Jordan, Hayley, Ireland, Siobhan, and Ava Gilmore. Three other grandchildren preceded him in death.

Besides his wife of 47 years, he is survived by his sister, Ginny Venditti and sister-in-law, Sister Marylou Lyons, CND and numerous nieces and nephews and a lot of cousins and dear friends. Jay loved life, loved being with his family and friends and telling stories (like nobody else could) about Waterville.  He was a member of Bucks Hill Community Club and communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Church.

Anywhere he went he would find a friend to talk to whether it was in Waterbury, Newport, Cape Cod, Las Vegas or any other of his favorite locales. He was a true friend to all who knew him.

Arrangements: Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 5, at 9:00 A.M. from the Bergin Funeral Home 290 East Main St. Waterbury to Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 309 South Main St., for mass of Christian burial at 10:00 A.M. Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Watertown. Calling hours are Tuesday from 3:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
