Obituary

Waterbury- Mr. James R. Monroe, Sr, 73, died Monday evening, July 7, at Vitas Innovative Hospice Care at St. Mary's Hospital. He was the husband of Diane (Donnelly) Monroe.

Mr. Monroe was born January 7, 1941 in Waterbury, son of the late Floyd E. and Mary L. (Mahoney) Monroe. Raised in Waterbury he attended local schools and was a graduate of the Carson Long Military Academy in New Bloomfield, PA. Following graduation he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served honorably for four years. Following his service to his country he then went to work for Connecticut Light and Power from 1966 until his retirement in 2000.

After his retirement he enjoyed his morning stop at Colonial News, "Fudgies", for his coffee and conversation with friends. He will be remembered most for the joy he found in his grandchildren and his loving dedication to attend as many of their events as possible, he was an ever present face in the crowd at countless sporting events and activities.

In addition to his wife he is survived by his children; James R. Monroe, Jr and his wife Mary of Waterbury, Christopher J. Monroe and his wife Kathie of Old Wethersfield and Mary Alice Paradiso and her husband Christopher of Stafford Springs; his grandchildren, Emma, Jack, Abby, Jake, Ali, Will, Gianni and Mia; sister-in-laws, Linda and Sharon Donnelly; brother-in-law, James Donnelly and his wife Ruth; nephews, James, Michael and Robert Donnelly; niece, Nancy Traurig and several cousins.

Arrangements: Calling hours will be held on Thursday, July 10, from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Bergin Funeral Home 290 East Main St. Waterbury. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, July 11, at 10:00 A.M. at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. Burial with full military honors will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Watertown.
