Obituary

John P. Burke died at his home in Dallas, Texas November 30, 2009.  Mr. Burke was born November 13, 1931 in Thompsonville, Connecticut, to the late John P. and Hilda (Shaughnessy) Burke.  He received his bachelor's degree from The College of The Holy Cross and served in the United States Army in Korea.  After his discharge from the Army he worked several years for IBM in the Waterbury area.  Mr. Burke was associated with Centerbank for twenty six years and served for eight years as the institutions President and CEO.  He also served as the President and CEO of Bristol Savings Bank until his appointment in 1994 as Commissioner of Connecticut Department of Banking.  He served in that position for ten years until his retirement in 2004.
Mr. Burke served as an ex offico member of the Board of the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority.  He served on the Board of Directors of the Community Economic Development Fund Foundation and as a member of the Connecticut Economic Conference Board.  He is a former Chairman and board member of the Conference of State Bank Supervisors and was a member of the organizations international legislative and bylaws committee.

Mr. Burke has long been active in professional and civic affairs. He served on the Board of Waterbury Hospital.  He serves on the Board of Directors of the Waterbury Chamber of Commerce, the Board of St. Mary's Hospital Foundation, the Board of Teikyo Post College Foundation and the Board of Teikyo Post University.  His past professional associations include time spent as Chairman of the former Connecticut Savings Bank Association and as a Director of the Savings Bank Life Insurance Company.  Jack is a member and past President of the Country Club of Waterbury, a member and past President of Connecticut State Senior Golf Association. He was also a member of St. John of the Cross Church in Middlebury. During his time in Dallas, he served on the finance committee of The Dallas Institute for the Humanities and Culture.

He is survived by his wife Carolyn Pool of Dallas, Texas and Middlebury, Connecticut, his daughter, Maura and her husband Scott Appel and their children Hallie, Brynn and Ethan of Dove Canyon, California, his son, John Burke of Providence, Rhode Island, his sister in law, Mary Ann Burke and several nieces and nephews. Jack is predeceased by his brothers, Francis of Enfield, Connecticut and Terrance and his wife Claire of Stamford, Connecticut.
Arrangements: Funeral services will be held Saturday, at 10:15 from Bergin Funeral Home, 290 East Main Street, Waterbury to arrive at St. John of the Cross Church in Middlebury for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 A.M. Calling Hours will be held Friday from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.
