Obituary

Southbury - John R. Carey, 85, died November 12, 2015, after a long illness.  He was the husband of the late Mary (Kennedy) Carey.

John was born in Waterbury on February 9, 1930, the son of the late John B. Carey and Mabel (Burns) Carey.  He was a graduate of both Sacred Heart High School in Waterbury and Providence College, where he earned a degree in Economics.  John worked for 36 years as a Waterbury teacher, until his retirement in 1990.  A former Social Studies teacher, he had a particular passion for history.  John also enjoyed golfing with friends.

John proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Korean War.

He was a communicant of Blessed Sacred Church in Waterbury and was a member of both VFW Post 7790 – Waterbury and American Legion – Oakville Post 195.

John is survived by his three sons, Michael Carey and his wife Jan of Middlebury, CT; Patrick Carey and his wife Sheila of Cheshire, CT; and John Carey and his wife Nancy of Storrs, CT.  He also leaves behind his grandchildren Flannery (Barry) McDermott, Patrick and Grace Carey, as well as his great grandson Oisin McDermott.

A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, November 21, at 10:00 A.M. at Blessed Sacrament Church in Waterbury. There are no calling hours. Burial is private. The Bergin Funeral Home of Waterbury is assisting with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to: MDA at 127 Washington Ave. 3rd Fl. West, North Haven, CT 06473.  These funds will be used towards research and local services for individuals with ALS and other neuromuscular disease.
