John Michael Moriarty, Sr.
Former Scovill Hayseeder's Musician

Waterbury- Mr. John Michael Moriarty, Sr., 85, died Thursday, October 2 at the Waterbury Hospital after a brief illness.

Mr. Moriarty was born November 15, 1922 in Waterbury, son of the late Patrick and Julia (O'Sullivan) Moriarty. John retired from Scovill manufacturing and Century Brass as machinist in the east machine room in 1983 after 42 years. He had begun his employment with Scovill's after graduation from Wilby High School, class of 1941. He joined the Scovill Hayseeder's Band in 1942. The group formed by Gertrude Swirda and John Madden, with Carl Copeland as musical director, took part in all the major War Bond Drives in Waterbury. They often played throughout the Scovill plants and at the Victory House on the Waterbury Green. They also played for War Bond Drives in Boston and New York City, including one performance witnessed by forty thousand people in Times Square. An accomplished bass player, he also played with Freddie Bredice's Orchestra and Cliff Slater's Band.

He is survived by one son, John Moriarty, Jr and his wife Carol (Stack) Moriarty of Middlebury; one daughter, Kathleen Moriarty and her husband, Attorney John Ambrozaitis of Bethlehem; one brother, Patrick Moriarty of Waterbury; three grandchildren, James Ambrozaitis of Naugatuck, Attorney Elisabeth Moriarty-Ambrozaitis of Washington, DC and Michael Moriarty and his wife Nicole (Kasper) Moriarty of South Windsor and several cousins, nieces and nephews and close friend, Lillian Walters formerly of Prospect.. He was predeceased by his former wife, June (Downs) Moriarty and a brother, Eugene Moriarty.

John's family would like to thank the staff of Meridian Manor Health and Rehabilitation for the excellent care he received since becoming a resident two years ago.

Arrangements: Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 6 at 9:15 A.M. from the Bergin Funeral Home 290 East Main St., Waterbury to Saints Peter and Paul Church for mass of Christian burial at 10:00 A.M. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours are Sunday, October 5 from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
