Obituary

Joseph "Joe" F. Maloney, 81, of East Hartford, CT peacefully passed away among his family at Hartford Hospital on June 6th, 2024.  He was born in Waterbury, CT on July 19th, 1942, the son of Charles R. Maloney and Ethel M. Nurnberger. He was a graduate of Wilby High School in Waterbury.  Joe started his career as a meat-cutter working in various supermarkets before joining Walbaum's where he became a district meat manager.  Always having an entrepreneurial spirit, he & his family owned & operated a convenience store in Thomaston, CT during the 1980's  This was followed by being co-owner of Ellington Supermarket, which was known for its meat department. Lastly, in retirement, he owned & operated Joe's Seafood & Meat in Vernon, CT. Joe enjoyed sports throughout his life, playing football and basketball in his youth.  As an adult he passionately followed various sports teams including his beloved UConn Women's & Men's basketball teams.  He was proud to have attended two Super Bowls in person. Joe is survived by his four daughters Kelly E. Shaw, Jody A. Williams, Robin L. Graham and Tracy J. Schiffmiller.  He is also survived by his five beloved grandchildren, Paige B.(Maloney) Melendez, Stephanie L. (Graham) Talbot, Courtney M. Graham, Lauren E. Crowe, and Thomas J. Shaw, and his two great grandchildren, Carter W. Melendez and Abigail L. Talbot.  Joe is also survived by his sister, Margaret "Meg" M. (Maloney) LaRose and his niece Melissa (LaRose) Williams. Joe was predeceased by his sisters Joan D (Maloney) Newton, and Doris M. Maloney.  He was also predeceased by his former wife Karen E. (Kobryn) Maloney. The family would like to thank the staff at Hartford Hospital for the kindness and support given to Joe. His funeral service will be held on Monday, June 10, at 11:00 A.M. at Bergin Funeral Home, 290 East Main St. Waterbury, followed by a burial at New St. Joseph's Cemetery in Waterbury. Relatives and friends are invited to call from 10:00 A.M. until time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to East Hartford CT Senior Center of 15 Millbrook Drive, East Hartford CT, where Joe enjoyed playing cards and socializing with friends.
