Wolcott- Mrs. Kathleen Patricia (Burns) Fitzgerald, 93, passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on Saturday, August 29, at the Vitas Hospice Unit at St. Mary's Hospital following an extended illness. She was the widow of Francis G. Fitzgerald.
Mrs. Fitzgerald was born August 10, 1922 in Waterbury, daughter of the late Patrick "Toddy" and Julia (Reardon) Burns. The youngest of an Irish Catholic family of nine children, she graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1940 and thereafter completed several business administration certificate programs. She worked at U.S. Time Corporation (Now Timex) and eventually retired from the Hartford's Travelers Insurance data processing department.
She married her devoted husband Francis G. "Frank" Fitzgerald in 1952 and enjoyed 56 happy years of marriage. Following their retirement, they traveled extensively to many domestic and international locations, including Ireland. Kathleen most cherished her roles as Mom, Grandma, Aunt, Cousin and Friend!
A lifelong devout Roman Catholic, Mrs. Fitzgerald believed in good causes and service to others. She was a former Waterbury L.A.O.H. member and was active in her St. Margaret's Church and St Pius X Church parishes and numerous other travel/retirement groups prior to her illness. As a member of the "Greatest Generation", Kathleen P. Fitzgerald was blessed with a long happy life, was the Matriarch of her family and will be long remembered and missed by numerous friends and family.
Survivors include, her son, David J. Fitzgerald of Wolcott; her granddaughter, Juliana Fitzgerald and daughter-in-law, Marlane (Haddad) Fitzgerald of Waterbury as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, most residing the greater Waterbury area. In addition to her husband Frank, she was predeceased by all eight of her siblings, James Burns, Dorothy "Doss" Monaghan, Cecilia Burns, Winfred Butterly, Edward "Buddy" Burns, Mary Burns and twins, Joseph and John Burns (John did not survive infancy). All of Kathleen's brothers, as well as her husband Frank, were combat veterans of WWII.
Arrangements: Calling hours will be held on Friday, September 4, from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Bergin Funeral Home 290 East Main St., Waterbury. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, at 9:15 A.M. from the funeral home to the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception for mass at 10:00 A.M. Committal will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
