Obituary

A true Southbury native, Lester M Cable, age 74, died peacefully at his home on Thursday August 14, 2008, after a six year battle with mesothelioma.  Son of the late Media G. Fields Wilson Cable and Glover Cable, he was born during a hurricane in a small Southbury house on Nelson Rd – a road named for his maternal grandfather Alrick Nelson.  Much of Les' childhood was spent on his family's two dairy farms in both Watertown and Southbury.  He joined the Navy in 1951, serving on the Destroyer Larson until 1954.  After leaving the military, he attended Kaynor Tech, earning his "Journeyman's License in Detail and Paper Products."  He advanced to the position of design and quality control engineer at Consolidated Industries of Cheshire where he was employed for thirty-five years.
He was married on May 21, 1955, to Lorraine M (Mailhot) Cable.  They built their current Southbury home together in 1957.  Besides his wife of 53 years, Les is survived by one son Richard M Cable of Glendale, CA, two daughters, Cathy L Cable of Wayne, ME and  Sandra (Cable) Votto of Southbury, two cherished granddaughters, Kristen Votto and Kaleigh Votto, both of Southbury, along with many brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.  He was predeceased by his brother Norman Cable of Southbury, two half brothers, James Wilson of Fairfield and Donald Wilson of Southbury, and two half sisters, Virginia (Wilson) Richard of Kingman AZ, and Betty (Wilson) Lynn of Watertown.  Les especially remembered Betty's husband, Robert Lynn, who was like a father to him for many years.
Besides his family, Les' true passion was the Southbury Volunteer Fire Department, where he had been a very active volunteer for over 50 years.  He held the positions of Lieutenant and Captain.   He was co-coordinator of the fire department's 75th anniversary celebration and parade held last September.
Family and friends may call Friday August 15, from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM at the Sacred Heart Church Chapel in Southbury.   A funeral mass will be held on Saturday August 16 at 11:00 AM at the Sacred Heart Church in Southbury.
