Waterbury- Mr. Raymond J. Davis, 84, died Monday, June 21, at the Cook Willow Health Center in Plymouth. He was the widower of Jane (McLean) Davis.
Mr. Davis was born September 5, 1925 in Waterbury son of the late Raymond L. and Agnes (Brennan) Davis. He had retired from CL & P after 44 years working in service installation. An active member of the Knights of Columbus, he had been a member of Sheridan Council # 24 and was a fourth degree Knight. An Army veteran of WWII he served honorably in the Philippines. He was an avid baseball player from an early age, starting at St. Mary's Grammar School followed by semi-pro baseball with the Twi-Met League. He was invited to a try out with the Yankees, pitching from the mound in Yankee Stadium. While in the Army he was involved in Armed Services Baseball, playing against and with many Major League stars.
Volunteer work was a very important part of Ray's life, he spent countless hours volunteering for many local organizations, including twelve years at Meridian Manor were he was president of the Home Association, volunteering to work with the mentally handicapped citizens through the Knights of Columbus and was awarded Donor of the Year in 2004 from the Help Hospitalized Veterans USA.
He is survived by four sons, Mark E. Davis of Rocky Hill, Raymond M. Davis of Waterbury, Edward M. Davis of Harwinton and Michael R. Davis of Waterbury; three sisters, Irene Zappone of Watertown, Nancy Mordenti of Venice, FL and Rosemary DeLucia of Waterbury; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert and William Davis and one sister Pat Tata.
Arrangements: Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 25, at 10:00 A.M. at the Bergin Funeral Home 290 East Main St. Waterbury. Burial with full military honors will follow in New Pine Grove Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday, June 24, from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
