Obituary

Watertown- Mr. Robert M. "Lefty" Bourassa, 78, died Thursday morning, May 23, at Vitas Innovative Hospice Care at St. Mary's Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Maureen (Connors) Bourassa.

Mr. Bourassa was born in Waterbury on August 19, 1934, son of the late Paul and Edna (Gregory) Bourassa and was a graduate of St. Anne's Grammar School and Crosby High School. He was a resident of Waterbury for 50 years.

Mr. Bourassa was elected Democratic City Sheriff in 1976 and served 10 years under former Mayor Edward D. Bergin, Jr. He had been employed by the Danbury News Times as a printer for 30 years. He had also worked for the Republican American, the New Haven Register and the Hildreth Press in Bristol. He was very active in union activities serving as Secretary Treasurer of the Connecticut Typographical Union for 25 years, President of the Danbury Typographical Union for over 25 years and was a Union Organizer for the International Typographical Union. He was a third degree member of Knights of Columbus Sheridan Council in Waterbury and was a Retreatant of the Passionist Retreat House in West Hartford.

Mr. Bourassa was very active at St. John the Evangelist Church, where he was a communicant and served as a CCD teacher and served on the Religious Formation Committee.

In addition to his wife of 57 years, he is survived by three daughters, Mary Baumbach and her husband Steven of Watertown, Denise Lavorgna and her husband Robert of Watertown and Diane Bourassa of Rye, NY; three sons, Robert Bourassa and his wife Catherine of Trumbull, Michael Bourassa and his wife Robin of Wethersfield and Paul Bourassa and his wife Lori of Watertown and 9 grandchildren, Christian Baumbach, Danielle Lavorgna, Sarah Baumbach, Remy Bourassa, Leah Bourassa, Allyson Bourassa, Alexis Bourassa, Jenna Bourassa and Cassidy Bourassa. He was predeceased by his brother, Lawrence.

The family would like to thank the staff of St. Mary's Hospital and the staff of the Vitas Innovative Hospice Care for the care given to Mr. Bourassa.

Arrangements: Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, May 25, at 10:00 A.M. at St. John the Evangelist Church in Watertown. Friends are asked to meet directly at church. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Waterbury. Calling hours are today (Friday) from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Bergin Funeral Home, 290 East Main St., Waterbury.
