Rodney DeLeon, 93, of Middlebury, died peacefully at Waterbury Hospital on May 2, 2014 accompanied by his family. Mr. DeLeon was born in Waterbury, Conn., Oct. 3, 1920, to James and Josephine (Stanziano) DeLeon, the sixth of eight children.
Mr. DeLeon attended public schools in Waterbury, worked at Scovill Manufacturing Co., and served in the Navy as a radioman on various ships in the Pacific during World War II. After the war ended, the education benefit provided by the GI Bill for Military Veterans allowed him to attend Bentley College in Boston where he earned a degree in Accounting. He returned to Waterbury and was soon hired as an accountant at T. Sendzimir Inc., a company that designed and sold high precision cold metal rolling mills. During his long career at the company, he advanced to become Treasurer and Senior Vice President.
Rodney was a member of the Liberty Lodge #123 AF & AM in Waterbury from 1959 to1975 where he had attained the 32nd degree of the Scottish Rite. He was active in various community and church functions and enjoyed quiet activities—hikes in State parks and neighborhood walks, day trips to the beach, fishing, tending a vegetable garden, and playing poker with his friends. He also liked flowering shrubs and was especially fond of his peonies.
He was a dependable man, very capable in the face of challenge, yet modest about his successes. He was a devoted husband to Marion J. (Nowie) DeLeon for 49 years. He was a supportive father who helped raise four children during a changing 20th century. He was quietly generous with both friends and family members. He will be missed by all. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a daughter, Marion R. Johnson, of Waterbury. He is survived by two sons, Kevin and his partner Debra, of Waterbury, and Rodney of Middlebury; a daughter, Barbara of Middlebury; a grandson Jeremy, and great-grandson Jeremy Jr., of Patterson, NY; a brother, Robert of Waterbury, and many nieces and nephews.
A private funeral service was held on Thursday at the Bergin Funeral Home in Waterbury, followed by burial with military honors at Lake Elise Cemetery in Middlebury.
Memorial contributions in Mr. DeLeon's memory may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project P.O. Box 758517 Topeka, Kansas 66675 (www.woundedwarriorproject.org).
