Obituary

Waterbury- Mr. Roland Olander Miller, 79, died Thursday, February 6, at Waterbury Hospital.

Roland was born March 25, 1934 in Edgefield, South Carolina, son of the late Jasper and Mattie Belle (Dean) Miller. Roland and his twin brother, Rufus, lost their Mom in death when they were ten months old. They came to Waterbury in 1955 after the death of their father to live with their brother John Miller and his family. Roland and Rufus were practically inseparable and worked for many years at the same place and lived near each other after marrying. Roland did construction work, painting and was an excellent mechanic. A sparkling shine from simonizing cars for his boss and others brought much satisfaction and additional funds. He was an electroplater at Harper Leader, Inc. After retiring and because of his industriousness, he continued working at various jobs to keep busy. His most recent and latest venture was driving a livery van for seniors which brought him a great deal of joy.

Among his many interests was a love of music, racing and going to auto races at Dover Drag Strip. Spending time with family and the excitement of taxiing both his and neighborhood kids on his motorcycle were things he treasured.  Special times were spent with his son J.K., son-in-law, Thomas and Niece, Roxann, in addition to the two younger ones, Anthony and Stephanie. Especially after Ron's and Rufus' death, although she was always "Daddy's little girl" Jackie's care for Daddy drew them ever closer. His love of the family pets, Kano and her puppies, Fluffy the cat and Sergio (aka Puffy) the dog was a source of much fun and humor. He enjoyed a good game of cards and getting together with friends. Although not one of Jehovah's Witnesses, after getting to know and develop friendships with the brother's and sister's he was hospitable and was happy to have them come to visit, often welcoming the visit of the Circuit Overseer.

Roland is survived by his children, Jacquelyn (Miller) Jones and her husband Thomas, J.K. Byrd, Anthony Callegari and Stephanie Callegari; his former wife Theresa (Guillory) Miller and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Ronald and his siblings George, Jasper, Lucille, John, James, Onell and Rufus..
