Sally McDonald Sullivan, 73, widow of Joseph M. Sullivan, former Assistant Superintendent of Waterbury schools, died early Friday morning, 16 July, at her home after a long and courageous battle against cancer and in the midst of her loving family.
Sally was born in Waterbury to Hazel F. Crooks and Edward J. McDonald, Jr. on 18 December 1936. She grew up in Waterbury where her family lived at 120 Randolph Avenue with her grandparents, the former Secretary of State, Winifred W. McDonald and Attorney Edward J. McDonald, Sr. She graduated Kingsbury Grammar School, 1950, Crosby High School, 1954, and Central Connecticut State Teachers College, 1958. Upon graduation, she went on to teach at Litchfield High School until leaving to raise her family. Later, she taught for fifteen years at New Fairfield High School retiring in 1998.
In 1958, Sally married her high school sweetheart, Joseph M. Sullivan at St. Margaret Church in Waterbury. From that point on, she and Joe lived in Litchfield, Lakeside, and New Fairfield, returning to Waterbury in 1986 when he became Asst. Superintendent of Schools.
Mrs. Sullivan leaves two wonderful daughters: Elizabeth and her husband Joseph Covino of Cumberland, RI; Patricia and her husband Charles Ottavio of Fairfax, Virginia, and a caring and wonderful son, Joseph M. Sullivan, Jr. and his wife, Aileen of Southbury, CT. She leaves ten loving and attentive grandchildren: Sara, Meagan, Katie, and Jack Covino of Cumberland; Lindsey, Sam, and Charlie Ottavio of Fairfax; and Joseph, Mia, and Nicky Sullivan of Southbury. Sally will be deeply missed by her sister, Suzanne Welles of Oakville and by her two brothers: Edward J. McDonald and his wife Patricia of Ventura, CA and Terence R. McDonald and his wife Lori of Tonawanda, NY. Her loving nieces and nephews, Maureen Legg of California, Jason and Ryan McDonald of New York City, Julie Reibold of Wolcott, Karil Reibold of New Hampshire and Kathryn W. Duncan of New Hampshire as well as her cousin, Ann McDonald, will deeply miss her.
Arrangements: Family and friends are asked to gather directly at St. Anthony's Church in Prospect on Tuesday for a Mass of Christian burial at 10 A.M.. Burial will follow in Old St. Joseph's Cemetery, Waterbury. Calling hours are from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Monday, 19 July, at Bergin Funeral Home, 290 East Main St., Waterbury.
