Obituary

Waterbury- Mr. Tomas Lugo Rodriguez, "Don Tomas", died Tuesday, October 1, at Wolcott View Manor. He was the loving and dedicated husband of the late Genoveva Rodriguez.

Mr. Rodriguez was born December 12, 1921 in Ponce, Puerto Rico, son of the late Francisco Rodriguez and Manuela Lugo. Mr. Rodriguez was retired from the U.S. Rubber/Uniroyal Company and had served honorably in the United States Army during WWII. After retiring he opened Tom's Market on Willow Street in the early 1970's until moving to Puerto Rico for several years. He returned to Waterbury with his wife and became a longtime volunteer at St. Mary's Hospital under the Foster Grand Parent Program where he was recognized for the many hours of service rendered. In 2011 he was recognized as a Community Pioneer by the Hispanic Coalition at their annual Coqui Awards. Mayoral and State Legislative Proclamations were presented to Mr. Rodriguez in acknowledgement of his contribution to his church and community. He was well known for his talents in baseball, softball, dominoes and billiards, which he shared with the youngsters who participated in programs at the Puerto Rican Youth Organization where he brought his peaceful and respectful manner to the at risk kids.

He is survived by his sons, Jose L. "Joe" Rodriguez, Thomas Rodriguez and his wife Margarita, Gerald Rodriguez and his wife Daianna, Manuel Rodriguez and his wife Glenda and Carlos Rodriguez all of Waterbury; his daughters, Lillian Velez and her husband Edwardo of FL, Mary Ann Velez and husband David, Dolores Rodriguez and Genevieve Santiago and her husband Raul, all of Waterbury; his step-daughter, Antonia Ferucci and her husband Dominic of Waterbury; 23 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four children, Christopher Rodriguez, Francisco Rodriguez, Miriam A. Rodriguez Joines and Robert "Bobby" Rodriguez; four sisters, Maria Rodriguez Lugo, Audaz "Haydee" Rodriguez Lugo, Cruz "Crucita" Rodriguez Lugo and Elena Rodriguez and two brothers, Fausto Rodriguez Lugo and Severiano "Tito" Rodriguez Lugo.

Arrangements: A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, October 4, at 11:00 A.M. at Sacred Heart Sagrado Corazon Church. Burial with full military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Thursday evening from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Bergin Funeral Home 290 East Main St.
