WATERBURY - Dr. Vicente Tormo, 87, of Waterbury passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at his home. He was the beloved husband of Salvadora (Buenaga) Tormo for 57 years.
Dr. Tormo was born April 1, 1926, in Valencia, Spain, the son of Enrique and Emilia (Cogollos) Tormo. Dr. Tormo graduated as a doctor in medicine from the University of Valencia, class of 1950, then completed a rotating internship and a general surgery residency at Deaconess Hospital, St. Louis, MO. He did a three-year residency in orthopedic surgery at St. Luke's Hospital, New York, St. Giles Orthopedic Hospital for Crippled Children, Brooklyn, and New York Polyclinic Hospital.
Dr. Tormo called Waterbury his home for 55 years. He served the community for 38 years in private practice and as attending senior orthopedic staff surgeon at St. Mary's Hospital. He also served as Vice President Medical Staff, St. Mary's Hospital. He cared greatly for his patients, showing immense compassion and sensitivity for their well-being. After his retirement in 1997, his children would often hear stories from former patients of his kindness and sensitivity. He was a humble man.
Dr. Tormo was a member of the Waterbury Medical Association, New Haven County Medical Association, Connecticut State Medical Society and American Medical Association. He was a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American Academy of Disability Evaluating Physicians and the American College of Surgeons. He was Emeritus Orthopedic at Waterbury Hospital, as well as a Connecticut State Police surgeon.
His greatest joy was his family and spending time with his loving wife. He enjoyed traveling, relaxing at the family summer cottage on Lake Quassapaug, working in the yard, attending and contributing to his grandchildren's theater performances at Blessed Sacrament School, watching his grandchildren's many and varied sporting events and making paella. He loved capturing family memories through home movies and photography. He also leaves a collection of oil paintings that he painted in his early family days. While his Spanish heritage always remained close to his heart, often recounting stories of his childhood, his true home was the United States, which he loved and valued for the opportunities afforded him.
A devout Catholic, he was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church. Due to his devotion, he was knighted as a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem at St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York, in 2009.
In addition to his loving wife, he leaves six children, Vicente J.
