Obituary

Waterbury – William F. "Buddy" Flaherty, 71, passed away at St. Mary's Hospital on Friday, August 2nd surrounded by his friends and family. Buddy was born September 9, 1952, in New Haven, son of the late William J. and Helen (Alfano) Flaherty.  Buddy is survived by his son, Joseph E. Flaherty and his wife Jessica of New Hartford; his three daughters, Vicki Rose and her husband Evan of Hamden, Brandi Yanavich-Rogers and her husband Kevin of Southington, and Kristen Yanavich-Johanneman and her husband Chad of FL; his sister, Sharon Sopko of FL; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Pamela Dunican and his beloved cat Fiona. Buddy loved a good cup of coffee, vintage cars, and exploring diners around the northeast, several of which he had the pleasure of working the grill.  He never met a stranger; his house was always open for a hot meal, strong cup of coffee, and a comfortable bed. His Christmas Eve parties were legendary and you never knew who you'd see or meet. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and friend. His grandchildren were his pride and joy.  He was their biggest fan and loudest cheerleader. Buddy was a passionate and steadfast supporter of the Irish Republican cause, dedicated to the ideals of freedom and justice, and the Irish Republic proclaimed in arms in 1916. Known for his unwavering commitment, he could often be found reading Forógra na Poblachta at 1916 Easter Commemorations in Connecticut and New York. Each year, he proudly participated in "The Roll of Honor" at the annual Hungerstrike Commemoration in Hartford, honoring the sacrifices of those who fought for Ireland's independence. Buddy was a fervent supporter of Cumann na Saoırse Náisiúnta, embodying the spirit of Irish nationalism and inspiring others with his dedication and fervor. His legacy will endure in the hearts of those who shared his vision for a free and united Ireland. Buddy will be deeply missed by his family, his friends, and his comrades.
