Waterbury – William Howard Jones, Jr., 79, died Wednesday, January 12. He was the husband of Vernese (Kirby) Jones. Jonesy was born March 30, 1942 in Waterbury, son of the late William H. and Beatrice (Griffin) Jones, Sr. Raised in Waterbury he attended local schools and was a graduate of Croft High School, class of 1960. He started his employment with the city of Waterbury with the park department, working at Washington Park. On March 25, 1974, he started recruit training with the Waterbury Police Department. He was reassigned to Vice and Intelligence on September 11, 1978 and was then promoted to Detective on November 11, 1985. For many years he worked special duty at the Department of Social Services, first on Linden St. and then at the Thomaston Ave. office. He retired from the police department on April 30, 2008. Jonesy was an avid golfer and a long time and active member of the East Mountain Men's Golf Association. He played in the Republican American tournament and was twice runner up in the championship flight. His favorite past time was being Papa to his three grandchildren and attending their sporting activities and events. In addition to his wife of 53 years, he is survived by his children, Heather A. Ganung and her significant other, Gene Spino of Thomaston, Darcie L Rapuano and her husband Donald of Torrington and Keith H. Jones of Waterbury and his three grandchildren, Scott and Alex Rapuano and Aiden Jones. Walk thru Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, January 19, from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. and 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Bergin Funeral Home 290 East Main St. Waterbury. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday at 10:00 A.M. at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made in Jonesy's name to the Waterbury Police Activity League 64 Division St. Waterbury, CT 06704.
