Obituary

Waterbury - On June 10, 2023, William R. "Bill" Synnott peacefully passed away at home, surrounded by family, following a months-long battle with illness. Born in Waterbury, Connecticut to Ethel and James Synnott, Bill was a lifelong resident of Waterbury. He attended Bunker Hill School and Crosby High School. He was known for his jovial antics, spending his summers on the Connecticut shoreline with friends. In 1965, he earned his Bachelor's degree in Education from the University of Bridgeport. Bill earned his Master's degree as well as a sixth year certificate in Administration and Supervision from Fairfield University. He taught in the Waterbury School System in various capacities. Starting as a sixth grade teacher at J.J. Gilmartin School, he then worked as an administrator at Sprague School before serving for many years as the principal of Regan Elementary School. Before his retirement in 1996, Bill was the Acting Elementary Superintendent for Early Education. A devoted Catholic, Bill was actively involved in his parish, Blessed Sacrament Church, as the head of the parish council. He also served for many years as a church lector and altar server. Bill was a high-spirited Irishman who loved a good joke shared with friends, often over a pint of beer. He loved skiing, spending weekends at his house in Vermont, vacationing in Cape Cod, and spending time with friends and family. He spent his later years caring for his four grandchildren, taking them on daily adventures during summer breaks from school. He will be missed for his smile, his laughter, and the many stories he collected in his travels and shared with loved ones. Most of all, he will be missed for his presence; his humor and good-naturedness lit up a room. As one of his grandchildren noted, Bill always left a room with people smiling. Bill is survived by his wife of nearly 56 years, Lore (Brodowski) Synnott. He is also survived by his three daughters: Maura (Synnott) O'Hara of Northfield, CT, her husband, David O'Hara, and their children, Emily and David Jr.; Kimberly Synnott of New York, NY, and her partner, Michael J. Steiner; and Kristen (Synnott) Vinciguerra of Woodbury, CT, her husband, Vincent Vinciguerra, and their children, Owen and William. Bill is also survived by his sister, Barbara (Synnott) Teller of Niantic, CT; his sister-in-law, Cynthia (Brodowski) Power of Essex, CT; and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to extend its deepest gratitude to the wonderfully compassionate team at Smilow Cancer Center. The family also extends its deepest gratitude to Bill's hospice care team, which provided him with peace and comfort in his final days. A memorial service will be held on August 12, 2023, what would have been Bill and Lore's 56th wedding anniversary, to celebrate Bill's life. The service will be at 11 AM at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Litchfield, CT.
