Obituary

Waterbury – Mr. Xhevdet Shehu, 94, passed away on Wednesday, November 3, at Waterbury Hospital. He was the husband of the late Hildegard (Habel) Shehu. Mr. Shehu was born September 14, 1927, in Korce, Albania, son of the late Sabri and Mine (Ajche) Shehu. Xhevdet escaped Communist Albania on September 21, 1950, after the government threatened to seize his family's farm. Settling in Greece, Mr. Shehu became an active member of a resistance group that sought regime change in neighboring Albania. Later, as a member of the United States Peace Corps, Xhevdet worked to alleviate the suffering of starving and dispossessed Albanian refugees. Mr. Shehu emigrated to Vaterstetten, West Germany, where he met his wife, Hildegard, and started his family. Xhevdet and his family settled in Waterbury in 1957, where he worked as foreman at Platt Brothers and Company for many years. He is survived by one son, Karl H. Shehu of Waterbury; two brothers, Skender Shehu of Southbury, and Adam Shehu of Fier, Albania; four grandchildren, Karl D. Shehu, Eric Shehu, Lisa Marie Shehu, and Belinda Guessford; one great-grandson, Christian Hallock; and several nieces and nephews. Xhevdet was predeceased by a son, Walter Shehu. Calling hours will be held this evening (Friday) from 5:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. at the Bergin Funeral Home 290 East Main St. Funeral services will be held on Saturday morning at 10:00 A.M. at the funeral home.
