Obituary

Waterbury—Zakiyyah Abdul-Lateef, 90, passed away at her home on Wednesday, November 20. She was the widow of Hammad Abdul-Lateef. She was born on June 15, 1934, in Montgomery, Alabama, the daughter of Lou Alma Goss. Zakiyyah was educated in the Alabama public school system and graduated from Dunbar High School in 1952. She then attended Morehouse College, where she earned her nursing degree. She came to Connecticut with her husband in 1961, where she was employed as an LPN working at both Waterbury and St. Mary's Hospital. Zakiyyah later attended Mattatuck Community College, where she graduated with a degree in Human Services. Upon graduating, she continued her education, receiving her bachelor's and master's of science in Social Services from Southern Connecticut State University. Mrs. Abdul-Lateef was the Director of Social Services for several nursing care facilities throughout her career. Perhaps her favorite occupation, Zakiyyah, was also an educator and taught at the college level for more than 30 years at Naugatuck Valley Community College. Zakiyyah's faith was a cornerstone of her life. She was a devout and dedicated Muslim, deeply committed to the principles and practices of Islam. Her love for her faith was evident in her active involvement in the Muslim community in Waterbury, where she played a pivotal role in its establishment and growth. Zakiyyah Abdul-Lateef was a successful professional and a beloved mother, friend, and mentor. Her nurturing nature and wisdom, which she generously shared, made her a guiding light for many and left a lasting impact on their lives. Zakiyyah's legacy lives on through her family, a testament to the love and guidance she provided. She is survived by her children, Essie Blizzard, Treba Daniels, Pamela Mitchell, Monique Harper, Mahasan Abdul-Lateef, Waheedah Abdul-Lateef, Faheem Abdul-Lateef, and Donald Abdul-Lateef; many grandchildren; and many great- and great-great-grandchildren. Her nurturing spirit and wisdom continue to inspire and guide her family. She was predeceased by her stepfather, Roosevelt Brown, and two children, Rudolph Smith and Yvonne Smith.
