Mr David J. Bergin

Waterbury – Lt. Cmdr. David J. Bergin, U.S. Navy Retired, 60, passed away on Sunday, April 16, at his home.

David was born December 18, 1956 in Waterbury, son of the late Mary Louis (Phelan) Bergin and David P. Bergin. Raised in Waterbury he attended local schools and was a graduate of Kennedy High School where he was a champion swimmer. After graduating from Fairfield University he attended officer’s candidate school in Rhode Island. David was stationed in Pearl Harbor and served as an officer on the USS Davidson, the USS England and the USS Missouri. His service in the navy brought him all over the world. He retired from the navy with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

Following his service in the navy he had worked as computer specialist for SAIC in Naples, Italy, San Diego, CA and Hawaii. Over the years he sponsored countless children through the Christian Children’s Fund.

He is survived by two brothers, Thomas P. Bergin and John E. Bergin, both of Waterbury; one sister, Suzanne E. Debiase and her husband Thomas of Waterbury; two nephews, Nicholas and Joshua Bergin and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother, Joseph P. Bergin.

The family would like to thank the staff of Vitas Hospice for the wonderful care they provided to David.

Arrangements: Calling hours will be held on Wednesday evening, April 19, from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Bergin Funeral Home 290 East Main St. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday morning at 10:00 A.M. at Blessed Sacrament Church 182 Robbins St. Burial with full military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
