Obituary

Waterbury - Edward Daniel Bergin (Mike), 74, the longest serving Mayor of the City of Waterbury, died Thursday evening at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of JoAnn Mulholland Bergin.

He was born July 14th, 1943, son of the late Hon. Edward D. and Mary (Jones) Bergin Sr.

In addition to his wife he leaves two sons Battalion Chief Michael Bergin with the Waterbury Fire Department and his wife Jennifer (Smith) Bergin, their children, Brynn, Daniel, Cian, and Attie of Goshen, his son Patrick T. Bergin and his wife Dr. Jocilyn Dellava their children Conner, Jason of Chantilly, Virginia; his brother William J Bergin Sr and his wife Claudia (Bergen) Bergin, his sister Ellyn B Scully and her husband William Scully, sister Margaret O'Connor, of New York City, his brother Martin J. Bergin and his wife Julie (Tacey) Bergin, of Palm Bay, Florida, his sister Elizabeth L. Bergin of New York City, his sister-in-law's Maureen (Moore) Bergin, Carol (Zhunt) Bergin, Ellen (Coughlin) Bergin and Maureen (Hopkins) berginall of Waterbury many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers Patrick S. Bergin, John M. Bergin, Atty. Anthony P. Bergin, and his brother-in-law Robert J. O'Connor.

He was a graduate of Secret Heart High School in Waterbury; he received his BA Degree from St. Michael's College, Colchester, VT, and was a graduate of the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science.

He was a Professional specialist for the Health Service Branch of the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health. He served as the State Inspector of funeral service until his retirement in 2014.

He was currently running Reiner Products Ltd. the business his brother Patrick had
owned. He was a licensed funeral director with his family's funeral home for many years.

He was a life member of the 4th Degree Bishop O'Reilly Assembly of the Knights of Columbus and the Sheridan Council 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus, a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and a member of the Mattatuck Fife and Drum Corps.

The funeral will be held Thursday at 10:00 A.M. at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. Burial will follow in Old St. Joseph's Cemetery. Friends may call at the Bergin Funeral Home 290 East Main St. on Tuesday from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. and Wednesday from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. and 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.
