Tribute

Edward J Payton, 95 passed away peacefully on October 19, 2019 at his home with his loving and caring family by his side. Edward was born November 7, 1923 in Waterbury CT to the late James Payton and Mary (Barrett) Payton. He was the loving husband of Alice (Fuller) Payton for their 68 years of marriage.

In addition, his loving wife, Edward leaves behind his daughter Deborah Sullivan and her husband Kevin of Gainesville Georgia, his son Craig Payton and his wife Laura of Waterbury, his daughter Pamela Sugrue and her husband John of Bristol and his Daughter-in-Law Sharon Payton of Waterbury. He is predeceased by his son Leslie Payton.

He was one of eight children. Of the eight, he is survived by Marion Ciarlo and her husband Joseph of Wolcott, Lillian Miller of FL, and Jacqueline Happl of FL.

Edward was known as being a hard worker and very easy going. His wit, warmth, and fun sense of humor will be missed by all. He took great pride in his 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, Melissa Sullivan, Brenda (Sullivan) Bruce and her husband Daniel of GA., Stacey Payton-Cohen and her husband Cory of Mass., Carol, Jennifer, and Jilleen Sugrue of Bristol and Emily and Troy Payton of Waterbury. In addition to his grandchildren he was blessed with 2 great- grandchildren Jasmine Sullivan, and Elijah James Bruce of GA.

He worked at Scovill Manufacturing before entering the Army Air Corp. He was stationed in Hawaii after the attack on Pearl Harbor as well as Okinawa. He received many medals for his service. Edward retired from Century Brass (Scovill Manufacturing) after 44 years as an electrician and was active in area VFW’s, the Wolcott American Legion, and various Senior Citizen Centers. He loved taking trips to the casino with his wife and friends.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, October 25, from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Bergin Funeral Home 290 East Main St. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday at 10:00 A.M. St Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, 625 Baldwin Street. Burial with full military honors will follow at the New Pine Grove Cemetery.
