Tribute

Waterbury – Humphrey Earl Bridges, 92, of Waterbury, passed away on December 17, 2022 at Autumn Lake of Bucks Hill with his family by his side. He was the husband of Dorothy Bridges.

Humphrey was born on February 13, 1930 in Mars Hill, Maine, son of the late Kidd and Ruby Bridges. He attended Aroostook Central High School where he excelled in Basketball and Baseball. He entered the United States Air Force in September 1949 and was stationed in Alaska during the Korean War. Humphrey was hired by the Waterbury Police Department in 1956 and through his career he was promoted to Sergeant in charge of the Motor Patrol Department and as Lieutenant in charge of the Front Desk. As a highly respected and beloved police officer, he retired on March 1, 1985. He enjoyed a 36-year retirement at the family home on Portage Lake in Northern Maine. He loved watching UConn Girls Basketball games, the Boston Red Sox, and his favorite hobby was building stonewalls.

Humphrey is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Dorothy; his three children, Vicki Valaine and her husband, Vince Braucci, of Thomaston, Rick Bridges and his wife Fran, of Boiling Brooke, IL; and Kevin Bridges of Meriden; his four grandchildren Jennifer Anderson and her husband, Todd, of Sharon, Kimberly Perrotta and her husband, Paul, of Wethersfield, Steven Bridges and his wife, April, of Boiling Brook, IL, and Matthew Bridges and his wife, Jennifer, of Round Lake, IL; and 11 great-grandchildren, Jacob and Tyler Anderson, Emily and Kaitlyn Perrotta, Nickolas, Grayson, Boston, Greta, Nevaeh, Brandon, and Eli Bridges.

Calling hours are Wednesday, December 28 from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. at Bergin Funeral Home, 290 E. Main St., Waterbury. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M. at The Church of the Epiphany, 262 Main Street North, Southbury. Burial is private.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the nurses and staff at Autumn Lake Health for their compassion and kindness during Humphrey’s short-term care.
