Tribute

Waterbury - Joan M. (Merritt) D’Angelo was born in Waterbury to Anne (McEvoy) and John Merritt on October 2nd, 1931.  Her family moved around during the Great Depression from New Britain and the Pennsylvania Dutch area of PA, then back to Waterbury to stay.

Whether at Mass, a family picnic, or a ball game Joan was classy, from her hairstyle and dress to the car she drove … a convertible was the choice for her!  She and her family were fans of the beach.  When a Cape Cod trip wasn’t feasible, Meigs Point at Hammonasset was the next best place.

As the Executive Assistant to the CEO of Timex, she traveled the world.  Dancing was a passion of hers and while instructing at Arthur Murray’s, she met her fellow instructor and husband to be, Ronald D’Angelo.  Joan was very close to her two sisters, working with Barb at her insurance agency, McEvoy Inc. and Kathryn at H&R Block.  Joan was a thoughtful, generous, and helpful person.  She had wisdom, living by the simple yet effective approach when times get tough, “just take it one day at a time.”  Spontaneous too, she was always full of fun and cheer, and never turned down a good cup of tea.  A devout Catholic, Joan was not one to miss Mass at The Immaculate Conception Church.  Joan and Ron raised their sons in the East Mountain section of Waterbury.

Joan was predeceased by her husband Ronald, sons Andrew and John, and sisters Barbara and Kathryn.  She is survived by her son Ronald Francis D’Angelo; grandchildren Damien, Marissa, Alexander and Zachary D’Angelo; nephew and nieces William and Margaret Byrne, Frances (Ian) Neill, and Barbara (Bill) Schuler; and grand nieces and nephews Sophia, Laurence, Susie and Samantha Schuler and Adrian, Jason and Iris Neill.

The family wishes to extend a world of thanks to the second floor staff at Abbott Terrace.  They cared for Joan like family, taking time to relate to her and let her know she was important to them.  We are so grateful for the wonderful care they gave to her.
