Waterbury – Mrs. Mary Ellen (Hinchey) Wilcox, 96, passed away peacefully at the Middlebury Convalescent Home on Thursday, October 20.
Mary Ellen Hinchey Wilcox was born August 26, 1926, in Waterbury, daughter of the late Dr. Richard J. and Ella Mary (Hodson) Hinchey.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas H. Wilcox, her beloved brother, Richard J. Hinchey, Jr, Sister-in-law, Suzanne Hoben Hinchey, and nephew, Richard J. Hinchey, III.
Mary Ellen is survived by two nieces, Suzanne (Kevin) Hinchey-McCarthy and Beth Anne Hayes and three nephews, Michael John (Bonnie) Hinchey, James Francis (Lynn) Hinchey and Patrick Dennis (Katherine) Hinchey. She is also survived by many grandnieces & grandnephews: Suzanne Hinchey-Ponce, Richard Hinchey, IV, Stephen Hinchey, Jeffery Hinchey, Allison Hinchey, Jessica McCarthy-Obermeyer, Ruby Oatman, Emily Hjortstorp, Dillon McCarthy, Michelle Hayes, Michael Hayes, Morgan Hinchey, Davis Hinchey, Laura Hinchey, Thomas Hinchey and many great-great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her special friend, Maureen Wagher, who visited her regularly and lifted her up with love until the very end.
Mary Ellen was a lifelong resident of Waterbury and Middlebury. She obtained her LPN from Yale – New Haven Nursing School and worked at Middlebury Convalescent Home, where she met her husband while taking care of his father. She loved that she was able to complete the circle and spend her final time at Middlebury Convalescent Home and reminisce with the nurses about the old days. She was a kind and generous lady cherished her extended family and loved keeping up with everyone. She would often visit with friends and tell them exactly who was where and could name all of her great, and great-great nieces and nephews. She was a keeper of family history and was able to recall all the details of our/her family history. She touched everyone she met and will be greatly missed by many.
Funeral services will be announced later but is planned to be held during the summer of 2023 when her family can gather in Waterbury.
