Sidney N. Shapiro
November 11, 1922 ~ April 5, 2018 (age 95) 95 Years Old
Sidney N. Shapiro, OD passed away on 4/5/2018 from natural causes in Glastonbury CT. He was born in 1922 in Waterbury, CT, the son of the late Herman S. Shapiro and Elizabeth Goldberg Shapiro. He graduated from Crosby High in 1940. After graduating from high school, he worked in his father's grocery store until he was drafted in the Army. He served as a radar operator and cook during WWII in the Philippines and New Guinea. After leaving the Army, he married his high school sweetheart Ruth Kastleman in 1946, then attended Northern Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago IL where he received his Doctor of Optometry degree in 1949.
Ruth and Sid moved to West Springfield Massachusetts in 1951 and then Springfield in 1957. Sidney worked in private practice offices in Springfield and Holyoke; including Springfield Eye Associates where he worked for 25 years. He also had an office in the house where he saw patients at night and on the weekends. During this time he continued to serve his country by joining the Army Reserves, retiring as a Lt. Colonel, with the 309th Field Hospital based in Chicopee, MA.
Sid leaves behind his three children and their spouses and families: Steven (Lynne) Shapiro of Glastonbury, CT; Stuart (Janiece) of Lenox, MA; Todd (Gwen) of Glastonbury, CT, along with nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren. He also was very close to his nieces and nephews who made a special effort to see and call him these past years. He was predeceased by his brother Laurence E. Shapiro in 2016 and his wife Deborah Davidson Shapiro in 2001.
Ruth and Sid were long-time members of Beth El Synagogue in Springfield and Cape Cod Synagogue in Hyannis. They retired to Centerville MA. Ruth passed away just short of their 63rd anniversary in 2008. In 2010, Sid moved to an assisted living community in Glastonbury to be closer to his children and was a member of Kol Haverim Synagogue. The family appreciated the special care given to him by the staff at Brookdale Mountain Laurel, Masonicare Partners, and HomeAides, especially Sophia and Emanuel.
The funeral will be held at Bergin Funeral Home, 290 East Main Street, Waterbury CT at 1 pm on Monday, April 9, 2018. A graveside service will follow at Hebrew Benefit Cemetery in Waterbury.
Shiva will be held at Brookdale Mountain Laurel, 1177 Hebron Avenue, Glastonbury, CT at 7 pm on Tuesday, April 10, 2018.
Donations may be made to The Masonicare Foundation of Connecticut, Kol Haverim Synagogue in Glastonbury, CT, or a charity of the donor's choice.
