Mr Syrja Tasim Topciu

Syrja Topciu, 79, of Bethany, CT, formerly of Albania, passed away on Monday May 31, 2021.

Beloved husband of 50 years to Saxhide. Loving father of Muhamet, Merjeme and Qazibe (named after Syrja’s mother).  Proud grandfather of Bekim, Lindita, Dardan and Merita. Syrja is survived by two brothers, Beqir Topciu of Albania and Selman Topciu of Texas, as well as sisters Myqyreme Shehu of Bilisht, Albania, and Sultana Mullaj of Korça, Albania.  He was predeceased by brothers Myrvet, Mazar, Fadil, Kadri and sister Seare. 

Syrja escaped from communist Albania in 1965 in search of freedom. As a result, the family he left behind was persecuted by the communist authorities for nearly 30 years.  Syrja reunited with his siblings in 1991, after the fall of communism. 

Syrja was the proud owner of the family owned Country Corner Diner Restaurant in Bethany, CT, which he ran with pride, hard work, and honesty. 

Those who feel comfortable are invited to pay their respects in person on Wednesday, June 2, 2021 from 5:00 - 8:00 PM at Bergin Funeral Home, 290 East Main Street, Waterbury.
